I remember the exact moment it hit me—this life we’re living isn’t “normal.” It wasn’t one of the big, dramatic moments you might expect. No hospital crisis, no earth-shattering diagnosis, just a regular day that looked anything but regular to anyone else.
We were at a family gathering, and while everyone else was enjoying the buffet and chatting away, I was in the corner setting up my son’s feeding pump, calculating his meds, and mentally preparing for the questions I knew would come. “What’s that for?” “Does he always need it?” “Can he eat real food?” The well-meaning curiosity that never seems to end.
And that’s when it hit me. This is our normal.
While other parents are packing snacks and sippy cups, I’m hauling medical supplies and emergency contact lists. While they’re booking playdates, I’m scheduling therapy sessions and specialist visits. And you know what? That’s okay.
Embracing Our Version of Normal
It took me a while to come to terms with it, but here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
- It’s okay to grieve the “what ifs.” Let’s be honest—none of us signed up for this. And it’s okay to feel sad about what could have been. But I’ve also learned that there’s so much beauty in our unique journey.
- Planning is survival. I’ve accepted that my calendar isn’t filled with casual coffee dates, but with appointments and reminders that help us stay on track.
- Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s easy to look at other families and wonder what life would be like without the extra challenges. But I’ve found so much strength in focusing on what makes our life special.
Finding Joy in the Chaos
Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything. The victories—big and small—mean so much more. Seeing my child reach a milestone that once felt impossible, watching him giggle despite the tubes and tests, and knowing that we’re doing our best every single day.
And through it all, I’ve found that having a system in place to manage the chaos makes all the difference. That’s why I created my Medical Mom Reset Workbook—to help other moms like me stay organized without losing their sanity.

So if you’re feeling like life will never be “normal,” know that you’re not alone. I see you, I get it, and I promise—this version of life, as messy and chaotic as it is, is still beautiful.
